| Today my professor gave the go-ahead for making an app as a companion for MH4U. So I decided now would be the best time to start a guide. I'm going to post my own stuff at a later point, but I want to get the input of our other SA members. (You will be fully credited with any and all input, unless you'd rather go uncredited, this can be discussed at a later point)
Anyway, I would like input on the following things:
General Usage Play Style What makes a "good" SA Good armor skills (can be LR, HR, or G, just make note if you're giving LR skills because the best skills aren't available yet) and explain your reasons for your choice.
Things I will include in the app: Trees with pictures of rarity and the axe. The stats of each weapon. (the usual fare of a MH resource) The combo tree (something I haven't seen done) Tips and tricks (also not seen done)

| SA Basics: Attacks and Combos: X - Basic attack A - Side Slash into basic attacks R - Mode Switch
Basic Axe Combo: X > X or A > X (repeat) A basic repeating combo that begins with a downward strike, into a side strike, and ending in an upward strike
Basic Axe Combo 2: (Control Stick + X) > X > X or A (repeat) Starting the combo while holding the control stick in any direction will cause your hunter to take a few steps forward and "poke" straight ahead. After any side strike, this forward poke can be used, and will typically be how you start a combo if you do not sheathe your weapon first.
Other Combo: (Control Stick + X) > A (repeat) While just a subset of the above combo, this is a very short, and rather ineffective combo. One use of this would be to move forward, which rolling is a better option. The other use is to perform:
(Control Stick + X) > R This will put you into sword mode directly from a combo, allowing you to do even more damage as needed.
Unsheathe Strike: (Control Stick + R + X) This combination of buttons will unsheathe your weapon, and do a sideways axe strike, which can then be chained into your combos.
Other attacks: X + A (at stand still) This puts you immediately into an upswing attack, allowing you to go right into any of your combos.
Barrage Combo: Upward Strike > A (repeatedly tap) > X or R > (If previous was R) R The barrage combo is the Switch Axe's strongest combo. The downsides of this combo are you are rooted to the spot, it costs stamina for every swing, and you can only get out of the barrage every second hit. This should only be used on monsters that have very little movement such as Dah'ren Mohran, when a monster is tired and is standing still for a rest (still slightly risky), and when a monster has been toppled.
When used in conjunction with (Mega) Dash Juice, this becomes an even more effective combo in this situations. With stamina no longer being drained, the combo can be maintained indefinitely. When used without Dash Juice, you must be wary of how much stamina you've drained, and prepare to combo or dodge out of the barrage. Which you do will depend on how long you've waited or if you have the stamina to dodge.
In the case you combo into R, you will do a strong circular slash that hits a wide area around you. The only two options after this attack are to dodge, or hit R again to morph into Sword mode (provided you have enough Phial) and do a downward slice. Keep this in mind when using Sword combos.
This post took me way longer than it should have, and I have things I must do. I will add in Sword Combos later.

| Finally had time to do some work about the Sword Combos. Feel free to add your own input.
Basic Sword Combo 1: X > X > X (repeat) This repeating combo is a downward slice into a sideways slice, into two quick diagonal slices. This diagonal slice is your end goal in sword mode. More on this later.
A > X (repeat) A shortened version of the above combo, but without the downward slice.
Basic Sword Combo 2: X > A (repeat) This combo alternates upward and downward slices, great for cutting tails off of tall monsters.
Unsheathe Strikes: (Standing still) R + X (Standing Still or Control Stick) + R + X + A Both versions of unsheathing straight into sword mode result in a downward slice.
Other attacks: X + A > (X repeated) This attack is the "Elemental Discharge." This attack uses a large portion of your phial to do a very strong explosive hit at the end, while doing much smaller hits as it charges. This attack can be finished early by holding back on the control stick (opposite direction of your axe), as you tap X, discharging much faster, but for lower damage. Either way, this attack immediately reverts you back to axe mode.
(Roll) > X This rolls you into an upward slice. Good for rolling into chip damage against the tail of faster monsters.
Other combo: (Twin Slice) > (X + A) > (X repeated) You can very quickly initiate an Elemental Discharge after the twin slices. The short delay before the attack would begin with a normal initiation is eliminated when using this combo.
Transformation attacks: (Side slice) > R (Twin slices) > R Both of these Sword > Axe attacks result in a sideways axe slice.
Other Notes: Upward and Downward slices: The upward and downward slices effect how you initiate combos. In the most basic combo, you hit X two times to go into the side slash, and A to go into an upward slash. If you hit X on an upward slice, you do a downward slice. A would cause the side-slash, which you can then hit X to do the double slice, or A to do another downward slice. So it is better to think of these slices outside of their button context.
Ex: Basic Sword Combo 1: (Downward) > X > X (Upward) > A > X
Discharge in your combos & When you should use it: Discharge is a strong hit, but has a long charge up (for full burst) and recoil time. Thus, using it when a monster is mobile is not the best idea. You'll also likely do more damage with a few twin slice attacks than just a burst. However, when a monster has been toppled, you have the perfect chance to do a full burst. But also keep in mind, you can combo into the discharge. So when a monster is toppled, it is likely best to do the following combo: (Unsheathe) > X > X > A > X > (X + A)
From a full phial, this takes out about just over half of the bar. By the time the recoil finishes, the phial will have charged up back to over half a bar, allowing you to go right back into Sword Mode. Depending on how much phial you have at the time, you may wish to extend or shorten the combo to fit in the full burst, with time to get away before you receive a tail to the face.
Sword and Axe Combo: (Control stick + R + X) > X > A (repeated) > R > R > X > X > (X + A) > (X repeated)
This complete combo follows as: Unsheathe into axe side slice, upward slice, axe barrage, circular swing, transform into downward sword slice, sideways slice, twin slice, Elemental Discharge.
This is just one possible combo with the Switch Axe. That is one of the major strengths of this weapon, that you can easily switch modes and keep a combo going endlessly.
