| Just as the title says, what Monster Hunter game did you start with? Was it the original, Freedom Unite, Tri, or something else entirely? Let it be known!
Personally, my first game in the series was Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on the PSP though I had only invested about 20 hours into it before I lost my system. At this point, I saw that a new game in the series had come out, something I was unaware of when I purchased Freedom Unite, so I bought Tri and have been in love ever since. Except for underwater combat. You're a pain.

| I started the series with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. I had heard of the series before but had never had a system it was on, outside of Wii, and I wasn't aware Tri existed at the time. So, seeing that my library for the WiiU was pretty empty, I decided to give the game a shot even though the demo didn't impress me.
As it turns out, the mechanics of the game are vastly superior to the demo version, not sure what that was about, and I very quickly became hooked. I've racked up 500+ hours in 3U, and greatly enjoyed every minute of it that wasn't underwater. Long Sword and water don't mix well.

| As much as I hated water gameplay, it is duely missed. My first game was monster hunter, everygame I have played for monster hunter i got to 3* and stopped, but then 2 freedom unite, with the paclio came out and began grinding the game to no end since then. However my"pro" days did not come until 3U when i began trying that scrubby weapon type bows. | |

| I started at the end of Tri's life cycle, and am so upset I missed it in the glory days. But I managed to get 350 hours into the game before 3U came out.
Also, I did like water combat. It was slower, but made you think more before attacking.

| As for the game I started off with playing, my first MH was MH3 (Tri) on the Wii. I was loosely aware of the MH franchise in a peripheral sense, but at the time, I did not own any Sony consoles, let alone a PSP, so it was always a franchise that was on the very edge of my interests.
So yeah, Tri got me started. Luckily, I was in from the start. Indeed, I even managed to snag the last CCP+MH3 bundle at the local store. It took me a while to actually be ~part of the community though. I remember that I spent most of my early career just lurking threads and soaking up information from the likes of Souretsu, ElectricDoodie, and Omega_Bahumat - and to some extent, Sedition and Lord_Grahf when they took the time to contribute information relevant to my interests.
I did download MHFU on my Vita when it was free on PS+, and I guess I'm sort of saving it for a rainy season. MH releases just frequently enough that I haven't gotten around to missing MH and lacking a fresh MH long enough to actually put any more time into MHFU, but I guess if we're looking at the series chronologically, MHFU is the ~earliest~ MH I have played, if not my first MH.
I have mixed feelings about underwater combat. I really like the relative freedom of movement and 3D positioning options, but obviously, the swimming speed is a bit too slow for my tastes, and swimming skills don't make anywhere near the difference they could to be worth it. I actually enjoyed underwater combat in Tri for the most part in and of itself, but I hated how they changed the controls in 3U and by extension butchered the movement system. Beyond that, the sad fact of swimming/underwater battles in MH is that they will inevitably be mixed up with area design, and Tri/3U's areas - especially the Flooded Forest - had some pretty awful water zones.

| My first game was Tri and let me tell you this little anecdote of one of my first days: I was fighting my first G. Jaggi with my GS, going at it with my copyrighted Kick -> Sideslap™ combo for maximum DPS for something that was probably 40 minutes, while finishing potions and scavenging for herbs. Oh the terror when the G. Jaggi appeared in the same zone as me while I was gathering the afore mentioned herbs, I mean, he's a freaking dinosaur, it is a colossal feat to kill one, it's normal to be afraid and run for one's life, no?
In retrospect I really miss the feeling my early hunts gave me, especially the looking for herbs to survive part, really made the game feel like throwing me in the dangers of nature and I needed to do what I could to survive. Pretty epic for a game, but alas, buying items and the farm are probably for the better as that would get annoying really fast, but I'll never forget that intense feeling and I miss my Kick -> Sideslap™ combo

| Lol. I didn't get around to reading the damage formula until I had finished the initial offline campaign in Tri, and I had done so much whetstone-eating infinite comboing and kick/draw+slapping of my own all the way up to Ceadeus that 20-30 minute hunts seemed so normal to me that when I finally shifted to primarily using charge attacks and instantly saw my typical times go down to 10-15 minutes or less, I was pretty much blown away by all that untapped GS potential I had ignored during my scrubbiest of scrub days. That said, I will note that I had also made a point of beating offline before heading online, so I can at least honestly say that I had outgrown infinite comboing and reckless inefficiency by the time I was actually hunting with other players.
Yeah - there were still plenty of great ~novice~ memories though. Remember those newb days when wyvern egg quests were a nightmarish gauntlet that pushed you to the edge of your stamina management and awareness. Now when I see a wyvern egg quest, the reaction is usually **** yeah - early access to those mats. Going through tri with my alt was hilarious. Thanks Peco - appreciate you handing a Rathian to me on a silver platter.
Of course, I still had plenty of newb moments up to and past Alatreon. I'd say my prime was around hr 70 in Tri. Around that time, I was playing so frequently and covering such a wide range of monsters that I was virtually untouchable, and some of that carried through for a few monsters, although I won't pretend that I didn't get rusty as **** as soon as I stopped playing Tri regularly. That said, my first Diablos in MH3U just barely broke 7 minutes on my GS-only character, and I only got hit once in the entire fight, so yeah...some of them stay with you.

| I started with Monster Hunter Tri, as the Wii was the only seventh gen console I owned at the time. Nintendo magazine did a nice build up to Tri's release, so I kind of jumped on pre-ordering it, as it was touted as a hardcore game on a system that was missing them. Well, at that time the Wii was missing the type of game I could really throw myself into in the obsessive way I tend to approach these things.
MH3 sucked me in big time. I lanced for over a thousand hours before I even thought about trying another weapon, at which time bowguns almost made the game new to me all over again. From there I bought a PSP just to play MHFU, although the 500 or so hours I sunk into it only stopped at that mark due to being limited to solo hunting.
I've got a fair few hundred hours logged on MH3U also, although it didn't grip me in the same way as the two previous games I played, for reasons I won't go into here.

| My first game in the series was Tri. A lot of good memories on that game. I was so bad at first. XD G. Jaggi seemed so scary the first time fighting it, and every first encounter with a new monster was always terrifying in that game. After going through all the offline stuff I hopped online and got even more hooked. Finally was able to stop after playing 1400 or so hours. Good times! After playing a bit of Tri, I decided to try out one of the PSP games since a lot of people say Freedom Unite is the best in the series. I really didn't like it very much, but that may just be because I don't like using the "claw" method for controlling the camera and character. Needless to say I never got very far. I know, I'm a filthy casual. MH3U was fun, but a lot of it felt too same-y to keep me interested for too long. Some of the returning monsters from older games were fun, but there were just too many that were similar to Tri's. It didn't help that all of my local friends didn't play this game passed high rank... Still fun, but not as magical as going through Tri for the first time. | |

| Lol, if we're going to go there... I more or less consider Phantasy Star Online my real ~first~ MH game. Although to this day, I still say that the Mana games remind me quite a bit of MH, at least in terms of different weapon classes with versatile uses, relatively complex bosses, and general difficulty for melee fights. Heck, Children of Mana actually pushed the series even closer to MH.
But meh... | |
