For as little time I have been giving myself for other games... Generations is looking really good... But I think we're gonna get G down the road, so I'll just wait to grab that one.

I've also been tempted to give Generations a pass since it does seem like there might be a G version, and in theory, I could still do plenty of stuff in MH4U (although tbh, I really do not like the direction they went with endgame hunting and apex monsters - the novelty wears off extremely fast, and the more you see them and hunt them, the less ~apex~ they actually seem- ffs, give me gigasnarf and GI Jho back).

That said, I really like the looks of Generations, and it was always framed as a spin-off of MH4. They still could just move on to MH5 and keep true to the spirit of X/Generations being a one-shot, so to speak. Or, if they do release an expanded version of Generations, maybe they'll be cool enough to finally just release the extra content as not-full-price expansion DLC and/or support data import from vanilla.

Anyway, all hypotheticals aside, I've got my copy of Generations preordered, and I'll be ready to play it on day one (assuming it arrives on time). Also, I still intend to break with tradition and skip my usual ~single-player first~ approach for this one. When Generations hits, I'm going to jump online as soon as possible and actually make a point of hunting with all the people I've been meaning to, especially the people I missed out on while MH4U was still going strong. If they do go through with developing an expanded Generations, I can always use that to return to a traditional approach and focus on the single player experience.

I've already set up a copy on pre-order, so as long as it actually arrives on time, I'll be able to jump back into the hunt on the day it comes out.

So far I've had a chance to try out the demo a little, and it's looking pretty good overall. Striker LS is a thing of beauty, and Aerial GS is probably both the most and least graceful thing I have ever seen.

Finally got around to pre-ordering it, along with the new 3DS, this morning. I won't be able to play it on day one, unfortunately, as I'll be out of town until the 19th. While I did import X, I never played past village 2*, so I haven't experimented much with the game.

I'm excited to play with you guys again, though! Let's get hunting!

w00t
Rangeth and Ragnia are back.
Looking forward to hunting with some familiar faces, and hopefully actually making some balanced progress in this game. My MH4U progression was a complete disaster the more I think about it. That said, I have this odd desire to see MH4U ported to the Wii U/NX with cross-save if not cross-play compatibility. It would give me an excuse to really have a go at finishing things off, but meh, I can't ever say I didn't get more than my money's worth from that game as it is.

Rangeth wrote:

I almost forgot about the demo since EU got it before NA. I don't think I'll bother with the demo since I have no uncertainty about getting the full game on release this time around. It probably goes without saying that I'm going to focus on aerial GS. Definitely sounds hilariously fitting for me. I like aerialist combat in general, and MH4U already got me addicted to jump strike and meteor smash all day erryday.

Nice to hear that you're on board for this hunting season too, even with a bit of a delayed start. I hope mine comes in on time, but since it is an online order, there's no absolute guarantee that it'll arrive on day one, even though most of my games do.

w00t. Nice to see you back Valin, although I'm pretty sure I did ~see~ you playing TMS#FE on the Wii U.

Looks like we'll more or less have a full hunting party from launch, even though Lost is still on the fence. Maybe peer pressure will win out?

Indeed. I was/am still hoping for a Wii U MH4U port if only for this reason.

Unfortunately I'm just not really up to investing in a proper capture setup for 3DS either, let alone conveniently streaming or even just generally uploading video right now anyway.

Maybe we'll get lucky and find a member who already has a 3DS-friendly capture setup. Or maybe we can go hunting for streamers playing online and keep an eye out for when they're open to randoms/guests joining and lend an assist and/or reach out like we did with some of our other go-to streamers in the old days. Guess we can figure things out as we go.

Edit/Update:
Just got the notification that my copy of MHGen shipped today, so it looks like I am indeed ready for day one.

Actually, on the 12th me and my brother went Pokemon hunting. We stopped in at gamestop.

I ended up walking away with a physical copy of Xenoblade (in all of its rarity), Smash 4, the GC adapter, and a preorder for MHG.

So uh... when me and my bro aren't going ham... Yeah. Expect me to have beaten it tomorrow.

Edit: Finally played the demo tonight. Okay, I can dig it, as I expected cuz MH. However.... WHY ARE MY SWITCH AXE MORPHS SEPARATED INTO TWO DIFFERENT STYLES?! Part of my love for this weapon is that I could quickly switch from Axe, to Sword, and back again mid combo if the fight dictates I should need it.

Meanwhile, it took me a bit to figure out what the moves I had did completely. I mean, absolute evasion is obvious. Only after the second use did I realize Demon Rush is a super buff of some kind (which I could have figured out if I hit L/R while picking style). And my super combo, I need to experiment with the timing and aiming of.

All in good time! Also, yay for Nargacuga being back.

Edit2: The pre-order theme is everything I've ever wanted in a MH theme.

Awesome Lost. One of these days, we shall breakfast together.

It's like I always say: If every one of your friends got discouraged by their manipulative parents and decided not to jump off a cliff, wouldn't you want to lead the way and get to slaughtering all of the monsters below that much sooner?

Heh, I still don't have any devices capable of properly running PoGo. It's so strange being on the other side of the looking glass when a fresh Pokemon craze is sweeping the lands.

Let me know if you want to play some Sm4sh just for the sake of it, if we can even find time to stop playing the 3DS.

I'll probably have my copy of Generations in 6~8 hours. This is going to be such a hectic time for gaming. Nintendo has the best worst timing for Splatoon events.

Did you get The Fated Four preorder theme? Lol, I didn't even know there was a preorder bonus until I got my code from Amazon last night. It is a pretty great theme. The backgrounds make for some excellent atmosphere and Generations hype, music is spot-on, and I really like the folder textures and menu icon border aesthetic. That said, I think I liked the MH4U Hunter's Weapon Gallery theme slightly more than MH Gen: The Fated Four, but for now I'm going for the latter if only for the sake of novelty and hype.

Meanwhile...blast...I see Raven on my friends list already playing Generations. The wait is real; the struggle is real.

How early do I get enough barrel bombs to cart self? Also, why are you not home? Why is your game not with you, even away from home? The 3DS is a portable system.

Oh right. So that's what you meant by having to wait until the 19th...indeed the wait is real. Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but I doubt I'll get too far ahead of you for what it's worth.

Enjoy Evo.

And my super combo, I need to experiment with the timing and aiming of.

Thought I'd come back to these points since Styles and Arts are the main things on my mind right now. So yeah, Lost, it sounds like we're all probably going to have to take a little time getting used to the different styles and overhauls to our once-familiar weapons. I somehow managed to more or less completely avoid all spoilers for Generations, including mechanic spoilers, so the GS styles have thrown me off quite a bit too at first. For now I'm going to try to (re)learn all of the GS styles more or less evenly, although I think I'm going to primarily alternate between Aerial and Adept GS styles when it really counts, so to speak.

I love the flexibility and utility of Aerial GS, but again, went into Generations pretty much blind, so I wasn't prepared at all for a GS style that doesn't have any grounded charge options and traditional GS setup moves. It feels like such a massive handicap at first, but I'm gradually getting accustomed to it. I really like all of the options Aerial style opens up for GS, and it's almost like an inversion of traditional GS tactics that actually works.

Meanwhile, I think the Adept style might be the best ~default~ GS style for me. Pretty much retains the ~core~ of classic GS combat as far as I'm concerned, but now with a long overdue wicked running counterattack added to the arsenal that can chain into an even more brutal quick charged attack. At first I was on the fence about how well a GS style that puts more emphasis on a potentially gimmicky form of evasion would work, but it's growing on me very quickly. I'm not sure if Adept style is going to be Bayonetta style or Guts style once I refine it, or some ridiculously awesome combination of the two.

I don't have much to say about Guild style other than it pretty much seems like the go-to ~Classic~ style if I feel like I want a slightly more versatile set of more traditional attack options that are roughly the same as MH4U.

And I really don't know what to think about Striker style yet. I don't think I have enough Arts yet to weigh its ~advantages~ against other styles properly. Based on first impressions, it's really hard not to just write off Striker style as EZmode diet-GS and never look at it again. It's also sort of awkward to think about as a GS style, because I've seen plenty of Hammer users dismiss the GS in general for being the inferior weapon class for every purpose but tailcutting, and Striker style on GS seems like it is practically begging for more of that criticism. Either that, or I just need to wait a while and come back to Striker style when I'm not so enamored with the novelty of the Aerial and Adept styles.

Anyway, I think we need more discussion of styles and arts in general, especially for team purposes. Lol, they may not have added any new weapons classes in Generations, but now it almost seems like I'm going to have to quadruple the amount of weapons to learn about, roughly speaking.

I've gotten a taste of the other styles for Hunting Horn, and so far, I'm not really liking what I see.

Adept seemed really good at first, until you realize that it forces an X note during the counter attack. Sure, you can add two more notes into the combo, but it leaves you pretty open, and can result in having to totally reset the notes you already had planned. If you could actually choose what note it played, this would probably be one of the best.

Striker... you lose all of the good combo sets entirely, leaving you with attacks that don't string together well, slowing your song set-up tremendously. Plus, quite frankly, as good as faster recharge of the Play All Songs skill is, there's no point in giving up your attacking capability for having it.

Aerial I think has the most potential of the three, but at the same time I haven't had much time using it. The reach on it is very nice, and playing any note as the same attacks seems like it might be useful. At the same time, it can be a bit hard to judge exactly where on the monster you're going to hit.

And probably my most painful thing of note: They all give up using the A key for any attacks that aren't just the jab. You can't really combo with it any more, and the jab is just all around pretty terrible for damage.

I think the HH, got a nerf.... i know the Charge blade got a semi nerf, and Gunlance got a huge nerf, unless you play a specific new way. Switch axe got a semi buff, Long sword buff, bow buff, HBG, Huge buff(why isnt this ever nerfed....oh wait people dont use it right anynways).

PostSubject: Re: We ready for Generations?   We ready for Generations? EmptySat Jul 16, 2016 8:00 pm

Heh, I'm nowhere near close to doing a full review or overview on styles beyond what I've written so far. I definitely want to put some more time into it, but I am starting to get an idea of my options in terms of rough pros and cons of each style, and I've more or less got the specifics of what each style can do. Hard to describe things in terms of buffs/nerfs, especially since the styles provide different levels of utility that could vary quite a bit depending on whether you're in a team or hunting solo, what monster you're hunting, and other details.

Sounds like Hunting Horn users might have it kind of tough. The loss and/or redistribution of combos hasn't bothered me too much with my GS since it wasn't exactly the most combo-optimized weapon before.

As for discussion of optimal use and objective nerfs/buffs...I'll have to leave that for later. I've seen some attack modifier values floating around, and Kiranico and other resources are updating at a decent pace to get the information on weapons and the like out there, but I really need to just buckle down and power through some more of the game...and actually jump online soon. Just want to do a little more stuff in the village(s) first. How long does it take before I can reliably farm honey and other basic essentials?
